Make your own cold brew: Simple instructions for home use
Cold brew has become a real trend drink in recent years - and not without reason. The cold-extracted coffee tastes particularly mild, has little acidity and brings out the fine aromas of our beans to their fullest. The best thing about it: you can easily prepare it yourself at home. Here you can find out how to do it.
What is Cold Brew actually?
In contrast to hot brewed coffee, cold brew is made with cold water and extracted over several hours. This means that fewer bitter substances and acids are released, which creates a particularly soft, slightly sweet taste. Perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy coffee in a different way - whether pure on ice, with milk or as a base for refreshing summer drinks.
What you need for Cold Brew
The good news: You don't need a special machine or expensive equipment. All you need is:
- Freshly ground coffee beans (preferably our 250g Runar house roast ground)
- Cold water (preferably filtered or we recommend Black Forest water)
- A large container (e.g. a carafe or a mason jar)
- A sieve or coffee filter
Step-by-Step Guide to Cold Brew
1. Choose the right ratio
A tried and tested mixing ratio is 1:10 - that is, 100 grams of coarsely ground Runar coffee to 1 liter of water. If you like it a little stronger, you can also experiment with 1:8.
2. Mix coffee with water
Put the ground coffee in your container and slowly pour the cold water over it. Stir the mixture once so that all the coffee particles combine well with the water.
3. Be patient: Pay attention to the brewing time
Now it's time to wait. The coffee should be left in the fridge for at least 12 hours - 16 to 18 hours is even better. During this time, the aromas slowly release and create the characteristic mild taste.
4. Filter and enjoy
After the brewing time, filter the coffee through a fine sieve, a coffee filter or a strainer to remove the coarse particles. What remains is a concentrated cold brew, which you can dilute with water or milk according to your taste.
5. Serve & refine
Cold brew tastes particularly refreshing on its own over ice, but can also be refined with milk, oat drink, syrup or spices such as cinnamon and vanilla. If you like it sweeter, you can add a little sugar syrup or honey.
How long does cold brew last?
Cold brew will stay fresh in the fridge for up to a week. It's best to store it in a tightly sealed bottle to preserve its flavor.
Conclusion
Cold brew is the perfect alternative for anyone who likes their coffee mild and refreshing. It's incredibly easy to prepare - all you need are good beans, water and a little time. So why not give it a try?
